BEST MUSIC VIDEOMAKER
Skizz Cyzyk’s short films and videos pulse
with a controlled kinetic energy that goes way beyond mere shaky-cam
antics. Cartoony fish and dinosaurs weave through Skizz’s Monty Python-ish
“Cheese Tweezer,” a song by his band Blister Freak Circus – it’s just one
segment of his 4 Films In 5 Minutes, which copped a first-place animation
award and a Best of Maryland/Helen Cyr Golden Reel award at the 1993 Maryland
Independent Film and Video Festival. The animated video for Blister Freak
Circus’ “My Little Pickle Love Song” slyly subverts the reproductive process
with fly-by imagery out of a parallel cartoon universe and whimsical cue-card
lyrics – it took first-place music video honors in Towson State’s 1991 Student
Media Arts Festival. And “My Love Is So Big,” for his other band, Berserk
(Skizz plays drums), takes the standard band-plays-its-song format and pumps it
up with a ton of pop-kitsch fun –it won first place music video at TSU’s 1992
Student Media Arts Festival. TSU student videomakers rejoiced when Skizz
graduated. (Michael Yockel)
